Now that Qatar, of all places, has won the rights to the World Cup in 2022, we can look ahead to the designs for their soccer stadiums. They have yet to be built, but many of them are striking for their modernity.
The stadiums were designed by Albert Speer & Partner, GmbH, and they represent a huge leap forward in energy-efficiency as well as looking like an alien invasion in progress. The five stadiums will use solar energy to power air-conditioning systems that will keep fans and players cool during the games, in the midst of the Middle Eastern summer.
After looking at these photos, I’m glad Qatar won the rights to the World Cup. America, by contrasting, is strikingly boring and uniform in their stadium design aesthetic.
