Scrabble Changes the Rules

Mattel has made the first rule change for the popular board game Scrabble — allowing proper nouns to count.

The rule changes will take place in July and allow players to use “place names, people’s names and company names or brands.”

A spokeswoman for the company said the use of proper nouns would “add a new dimension” to Scrabble and “introduce an element of popular culture into the game”.

She said: “This is one of a number of twists and challenges included that we believe existing fans will enjoy and will also enable younger fans and families to get involved.”

I think I can safely speak for many fans of Scrabble and linguists in generally by saying “fuck and no” to this change.
