L.A. Restaurant Pays Customers to Put Away Their Phones

Would you check your smartphone at the door of a restaurant for the duration of your dining experience in exchange for 5% off your bill?

It’s a proposition owner and chef Mark Gold, of Eva Restaurant in L.A., is making available to his patrons, which he estimates about half take him up on the offer.

“It’s about two people sitting together and just connecting, without the distraction of a phone, and we’re trying to create an ambiance where you come in and really enjoy the experience and the food and the company,” Gold told radio station KPCC.

It’s nice to see a restaurant take this approach. It’s not an outright ban, but hey, if you want to check your phone you get a minimal discount. Everyone wins. I would do this in a heartbeat and wish more places — especially the movie theaters — did this.
