For several years now, Hollywood has been trying to revive the Fletch series, made famous by Chevy Chase in Fletch (1985) and its sequel Fletch Lives (1989).
It began with Kevin Smith trying to revive the franchise with a then little known Jason Lee as the titular Irwin ‘Fletch’ Fletcher, a Los Angeles journalist who dresses up to get the big scoop. After that fell through Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence signed on to write and direct a version with Zack Braff. That was only months ago and now Iesb.net is reporting that those two have stepped down from the project.
But the project didn’t die, instead director Steve Pink, best known for writing Grosse Point Blank, High Fidelity and directing Accepted has stepped in to write and direct. And who is stepping in as his Fletch? None of than Joshua Jackson. Yup Pacey Whitter will be Fletch.
Talk about an M. Night Shyamalan ending. So now Fletch Won will be about Fletch’s first story and his attempts to solve a murder case. So consider out excitement notched down about three levels.
- Kevin Smith/Jason Lee – very excited!
- Bill Lawrence/Zack Braff – curious at best.
- Steve Pink/Joshua Jackson – meh?
