2007 Oscar Nominations

Every so often the Oscars throw movie lovers some curveballs, maybe in an effort to appear hip, maybe just to keep us on our toes. No one need look past Johnny Depp’s nomination as Captain Jack last year. Unfortunately Borat, er, um, Sasha Baron Cohen didn’t get the love for his little comedy film. But man can you believe that Marky Mark got a nod for Best Supporting Actor in “The Departed”? Not that I don’t love Marky Mark, since time and time again he’s the best thing about every movie he’s in. That says a lot. With “The Departed”, though, I thought he got all the good zingers. And no love for Matt Damon or Jack.
As for Best Picture the only surprise was Little Miss Sunshine, which besides being the feel good, underdog movie of the year, was really just a “cute” movie. And I use the word “cute” as condescendingly as possible. It was funny, but it wasn’t Best Picture material…

The other surprise was Guillermo del Torro’s masterpiece, “Pan’s Labyrinth” taking home six nominations. That was cool.
