Marvel Studios is clearly looking to build on the tentative success of their self-financed/self-produced projects Iron Man and the reboot of The Incredible Hulk. Their next superhero to get the big screen treatment will be Thor.
Thor is sent to Earth to protect mankind with the help of his thunder hammer, and now director Matthew Vaughn (Layer Cake, Stardust) has signed on to direct this property.
This is not the first time Matthew Vaughn has attempted to work with Marvel. You may recall he was attached to direct X-Men 3, but he pulled out of that project because of imposed time constraints. Vaughn felt there wouldn’t be enough time to create a decent movie … and he was slightly vindicated when Brett Ratner did indeed deliver a turd of a flick.
The screenplay has been written by Mark Protosevich (The Cell, Poseidon, I Am Legend).
So now the question turns to who should play Thor? He’s got to be blond, strong and imposing. Stoic wouldn’t hurt either. Probably best to go with an unknown or a leftfield choice, ala Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark.
