Director Richard Linklater has been kicking around a sorta sequel to the cult classic Dazed and Confused for at least two years now. During a recent screening of Dazed and Confused in Austin, Linklater talked afterward at the Q&A about his next project, a “sort of spiritual sequel” to Dazed and Confused.
And that’s the rub. The spiritual sequel will be set in 1980 following a group of Freshman’s first weekend at the University of Texas.
According to CHUD, Linklater said that he will be shooting around Austin, Texas this upcoming summer, and that it will be about the first weekend of college in 1980. Thematically it’ll bookend Dazed, but it won’t have any of the same characters.
Couldn’t Wooderson or O’Bannon at least make a cameo of sorts. Let’s be real, as great as Dazed is, I don’t think anyone really cares about any of the characters future lives. But what would be interesting is at least seeing how Matthew McConoughey’s Wooderson is still the same or if Ben Affleck’s asshole O’Bannon is still being a dick. Nothing extended, just perhaps a brief cameo.
“I mean, if I was to do a general pitch it would be ‘Dazed and Confused goes to college.’ But it’s not that, but it’s kind of that. It’s about spending your freshmen year in college,” the director said.
Still, shooting fast and quiet as Linklater often does this movie will probably fly under the radar until its release – much like Before Sunset and Before Sunrise. I wouldn’t be surprised if this rises above the normal college comedy, but ultimately disappoints since it will inevitably be marketed as the sequel to the beloved high school cult classic.
