Grant Heslov‘s The Men Who Stare at Goats (Overture, 11.6) is based on supposed truth, or more precisely Jon Ronson‘s 2004 non-fiction book about the U.S. Army’s exploration of New Age concepts and the potential military applications of the paranormal.
When the project was announced, it sounded cool. But here, at least the trailer from Overture, we’re treated to what amounts to a slapstick yarn with Clooney and Ewan McGregor. A bit disappointing from what I thought the project was going to be. It feels derivative, in a broad sense, like I’ve seen this before — as if The Coen Brothers crossbred with David O. Russell’s Three Kings.
