An Unexpected Briefing

Air New Zealand gets help from Peter Jackson and inspiration from The Hobbit for their latest safety video. Sure, this is weird and it would be perfectly acceptable to make fun of it.

BUT, unless you’ve been living in a rock for the last 10 years, airline safety videos and instructions from the attendants is completely pointless. Oh, sooooo that’s how I buckle my seat belt? Thanks. Didn’t know how that works.

Anyway, since these instructions are required by law, you might as well make them entertaining and worth watching, no? And in Air New Zealand’s defense this is 100% less weird and creepy than its Richard Simmons version.

At the time of the Simmons vid in March 2011, I said: “Yes, in-flight safety videos could afford to be a little more exciting, passengers know the drill by now so why not regale and entertain rather than instruct? But this spot with a techno-colored Richard Simmons is downright scary. As in, I pray to God my flight crashes somewhere over the Pacific.”

Thankfully, that’s not the case with this Hobbit tie-in.
