So ‘Alien’ and ‘Blade Runner’ are the Same Cinematic Universe Now

On the Prometheus Blue-Ray extras, there is an overt reference to Peter Weyland discussing the use of biological replicants vs. mechanical androids with Dr. Eldon Tyrell, who you might know as the founder of the Tyrell Corporation in director Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner.

I honestly have no idea why Scott would decide to merge his two movie universes, which makes about as much logical sense as his Alien prequel, but given that Scott is currently working on a sequel to Blade Runner, it makes you wonder if that will be a movie connecting the two movieverses together.

Here’s why: Blade Runner was set in 2019, and Peter Weyland, played by Guy Pearce in old man make-up in Prometheus, received his patent on cybernetic individuals in 2023, which is also when he delivered a rousing TED Talk. io9 wonders if Weyland’s cybernetic robots came to replace Tyrell’s replicants. That would mean there was a reason to cast Pearce in that role, as he would play the younger version of Weyland in a Blade Runner sequel.

It would get me excited if the next movie is a corporate thriller about the Tyrell-Weyland-Yutani corporations battling for supremacy and not about replicants or aliens. It makes me wonder what the hell is going on in Ridley Scott’s mind?
