Sly Stallone’s The Expendables wasn’t a very good movie by good movie standards. But, it was a confident work of 80s action nostalgia that knew exactly what it was and wasn’t. It was also one of the more enjoyable action flicks in recent years as a result — funny, violent, over-the-top, utterly forgettable two hours after the final credits roll.
For the sequel, Stallone has rounded up even more action icons, take a deep breath — Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Chuck Norris, Terry Crews, Randy Couture, Liam Hemsworth, Jean Claude Van Damme, Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger — for another shot of geriatric action nostalgia.
It’d be nice if Stallone could bring aboard some younger talent, aside from Stathem, so that we’re not just forced to watch the action heroes of our father’s do their thing. Liam Hemsworth? The only reason I can think he’s in this movie is because Lionsgate forced him upon Stallone since he was in The Hunger Games, which was another Lionsgate flick.
