The strangest thing about the trailer for Judd Apatow’s latest flick, This is 40, which is a quasi-sequel to Knocked Up, is that it doesn’t feel like an Apatow movie at all. It feels like a terrible knock-off sequel to a beloved Apatow flick; a straight-to-DVD imitation of a James L. Brooks movie.
I don’t know if this is the moment when Apatow and I part ways, or if this will be the first relative dent in the Apatow armor (we could certainly debate the merits of Funny People). There is hardly a funny moment in this trailer and the end where Paul Rudd is trying to inspect his taint just feels too similar to the crowning moment of Knocked Up, if you know what I mean. The use of “We are Young” doesn’t win any points with me either.
That said, Rudd and Leslie Mann’s husband-and-wife duo were certainly the best thing about Knocked Up, so hopefully, this is just a clunker of a first trailer. I have no idea if Seth Rogan and Katherine Heigl will be reprising their roles for a cameo in this one. I imagine that to be the case, but I’m too lazy to find out and I’m not sure if that would be a plus or a minus in the points for column. [via vulture]
