The new Total Recall remake, directed by Len Wiseman and starring Colin Farrell, probably doesn’t have a three-breasted hooker in it. Which, in my eyes, makes it completely irrelevant. As with the campy Verhoven/Schwarzenegger 1990 original, this one is based on the Philip K. Dick short story “We Can Remember It for You Wholesale.”
But that’s probably where the similarities end. Whereas the original went for sci-fi camp, punctured with gasp-inducing violence — as is the Verhoven norm — the new flick, at least based on the first trailer, plays out like a grimy, sci-fi version of The Bourne Identity.
I’m not sure that’s a good thing, but it also doesn’t look as bad as I was expecting either.
