Wow.? Good thing I’m not a member of the invitation only torrent site OiNK.cd.? The exclusive site was raided yesterday by law enforcement and the admin, a 24-year old man from Middlesbrough, England was arrested.? He’s being question right now.? This is the music industry’s most popular source for pre-release material.
And though the major labels (who’s business models are crumbling and erroding as I type) are probably breathing a sigh of relief over this news, many smaller, less publicized bands on independent labels will be hurt, since they can’t afford to allocate money towards their promotional budgets.
Everyone knows that major labels make their money off of one band at the expense of ten others on their label, but with the rise of the Mp3 blogs it really leveled the playing field for bands you wouldn’t normally hear about.? Listening and writing about obscure local bands halfway across the country. ? End of rant.
The raid was done in conjuction with the IFPI and the BPI, two well known conspiracy organizations.
A Cleveland Police spokesman said: “This extremely lucrative and creative scheme consisted of a private file-sharing website being set up. Membership was by invitation only.
“The site allowed the uploading and downloading of pre-release music and media to thousands of members.”
An IFPI spokesman said: “Once an album had been posted on the OiNK website, the users that download that music then passed the content to other websites, forums and blogs, where multiple copies were made.
“Within a few hours of a popular pre-release track being posted on the OiNK site, hundreds of copies can be found further down the illegal online supply chain.”
The site’s servers, based in Amsterdam, were seized in a series of raids last week.
According to users of the site, however, it was still fully operational as little as 24-hours ago.? So the question that has to be asked is what happens to all the users of OiNK, some 180,000 estimated?? I mean now that the servers and all the information of the site has been seized at what point does the 24-year old admin start throwing people under the buss to save himself?? At what point does he give up all the information he has on the users he invited?
The fall out in the coming months should be fairly interesting for bloggers and music sites that rely on obtaining downloaded music from OiNK.
