A while back we noted with excitement that Ben Folds Five were reuniting for a one off show in Chapel Hill to play their 1999 album The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner, which not only broke the band up but it is one of the most underrated albums of the last two decades. It’s a curious mix of grandiose songs, bouncing pop tunes, sad ditties and one bizarre recorded message from Ben Folds’s dad.
When I first got the album back in college, I was at once mystified by how different it was from the band’s previous albums but also blown away that few others recognized it for what it was: an album of incredible genius.
Myspace was good enough to record the evening and it’s now posted, interspered with retrospective interviews with Ben, Robert and Darren.
I know what I’m doing for the rest of the morning.
