The last time Caltech won a conference basketball game was Jan. 23, 1985. That changed last night, when the Beavers beat Occidental in its season finale, 46-45, on a last second free throw.
“Tonight’s win is a testament to the hard work each member of this team, the alumni and the supporters have put into this program. I hope that everyone who has participated in Caltech men’s basketball is able to celebrate a little bit tonight,” said Coach Oliver Eslinger on the school’s website. “We still have goals and aspirations that we want to accomplish as a program and this win is another step toward meeting these objectives.”
My guess, however, is that Caltech has never celebrated this exuberantly for the 31 Nobel Laureates the school can claim. Makes you wonder what the better achievement is. Kidding, it’s obviously last night’s basketball win. Nobel Prize-winners are old hat at one of the nation’s leading technical schools. Congrats Caltech! [via LATimes]
