It premiered on Tuesday night, but I didn’t catch the premiere until last night. And dang, if this isn’t one of the best shows on television, then I don’t know what is. You can (and should!) catch up on either the DVDs or Hulu and then start watching when it airs.
The basic premise of the show is about a gang of outlaw motorcyclist known as SAMCRO (Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club Redwood Original) trying to hold onto their tiny slice of territory by running guns, etc.
The drama of the show is very Hamlet-like, with much of the interplay between the club leader, Clay (Ron Pearlman), trying to hold onto his power after taking over the club from the deceased John Tillman and the young pup, Jax (Charlie Hunnam), trying to negotiate the travails of the club and find his own independent power. And yes, Jax is Tillman’s son.
And behind all the (un)complicated men are a group of interesting woman often supporting, prodding and forcing their men into dicey situations. Katey Segal, as the head woman and Pearlman’s love interest, is positively entrancing as an Ophelia-type.
Yes, in many ways, this is pure Shakespearean drama at it’s finest.
According to TV By the Numbers, the ratings were way up for the season two premiere, which only means the show will likely see a third season.
Oh, and did I mention that Henry Rollins made an appearance in the Season Two premiere as a white supremacist? Yeah, the show is that awesome.
Sons of Anarchy airs Tuesday nights at 10 p.m. on FX.
