Is Aaron Sorkin’s The Newsroom the show he’s been building up to his entire career? It certainly feels this way. The first trailer for the upcoming HBO show makes it seem like Sorkin tossed the best parts of Sports Night, The West Wing, and Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip into a blender and frappe’d the shit out of them to create The Newsroom.
The cast includes Jeff Daniels, Emily Mortimer, Alison Pill, Dev Patel, John Gallagher, Jr., Olivia Munn, Thomas Sadoski , Sam Waterston, and Jane Fonda. HBO seems like the perfect vehicle to let Sorkin’s crackling, whip-smart dialog run wild. The only downside to Sorkin’s writing is he tends to be really ponderous and lecture-y.
There’s a fine line between being intelligent/interesting and being lectured to and Sorkin is always walking this tightrope. Always. It worked on his previous efforts about The White House and a sports show, it didn’t work so well when it was about a sketch comedy show.
Also, is it just me or does Alison Pill look an awfully lot like Lauren Ambrose on this show?
