RIP: Dave Brubeck

by James Furbush on December 5, 2012

Dave Brubeck, one of history’s finest jazz musicians, died Wednesday morning at Norwalk Hospital, in Norwalk, Conn., said his longtime manager-producer-conductor Russell Gloyd. He was 91. As a pianist, he applied the classical influences of his teacher, the French master Darius Milhaud, to jazz, playing with an elegance of tone and phrase that supposedly were [...]

Do you have an hour and a half to spare? You should, especially if you enjoy the music of Thelonious Monk, jazz or documentaries on musicians. The story behind ‘Straight, No Chaser’ began in West Germany in 1967 and ended more than two decades later in Kansas City, Hollywood and New York. It had its [...]

I have no idea whether or not this one sheet for the upcoming Miles Davis biopic, Miles is real or not, it’s probably fake, but it’s quit nice. Love the colored paint coming out of the horn. Plus, who the hell wouldn’t want to see Don Cheadle as Miles Davis.

Fans of the great jazz saxophonist Ornette Coleman should immediately head over here for a nice tribute to the man and a collection of amazing rarities to download. [via]

Jazz Horse

by James Furbush on February 17, 2011

As someone who has been working the Sweet Lemonade beat for the better part of two years now, I feel ashamed, foolish, and like a giant failure. The three tracks were originally recorded in a demo session sometime in early 1961 for Africa/Brass, Coltrane’s Impulse debut. Trumpeter Cal Massey conducted the [...]

Google pays fine tribute to the jazz legend, who would have been 93 today. The trumpeter essentially started the bebop and Afro-Cuban styles of jazz. Gillespie even ran for president in 1964 — the inevitable conclusion of a joke gone too far. I think we can all agree he would’ve made a much cooler president that [...]

Video of the great jazz guitarist from 1939. Also? What the hell is a bass fiddle? I don’t know, but I think I want to learn to play one.

Let’s start the morning off right, shall we?

You didn’t see it, but I’m scraping brain matter off my computer and work area, with the news that Miles Davis’s seminal album Kind of Blue officially turned 50-years-old yesterday. What is the over-under on how many babies were consummated with this record on in the background? 500,000? 750,000? 1 million? Would you dare take [...]
